Welcome to Ultimate Iditarod

September 15, 2002

Welcome to the beginning of an adventure that will take the next sixth months to complete, encompass 3,000 miles of trails in Alaska and the Lower 48, require the consumption of over 5 million calories, and cost tens of thousands of dollars!

The adventure, of course, is the the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.  But the Iditarod is more than just a 1,151-mile sled dog race across Alaska.  The Iditarod is a race requiring a tremendous amount of planning, training, hard work, dedication, and volunteer effort.  The Iditarod race itself doesn't begin until March 2, 2002, but the preparation, training, and hard work begins now, six months from the starting line.

Iditarod mushers come from a variety of walks of life, professions, backgrounds, and regions of the world.  Ultimate Iditarod will focus on two dog kennels that are beginning preparations for the 2002 Iditarod.  These kennels come from different areas of the country and are operated by families who make mushing (that's the term for running sled dogs) a major part of their lives.

As the events of the next six months unfold, and as the teams race across Alaska, Ultimate Iditarod will be there to present the story as accurately and quickly as possible.  The updates will focus on Ultimate Iditarod's two kennels during training and preparation for the race.  During the Iditarod, the Ultimate Iditarod crew will follow the race on snowmobiles, providing coverage of both Ultimate Iditarod teams as well as the events, stories, emotions, and experiences of the entire field of racers.

Thanks very much for your interest in the Iditarod and in the inside stories and events that capture the spirit of the race and make the Iditarod the Last Great Race on EarthTM.  Enjoy the adventure, and check back here often for updates, stories, and new features.
